KNITTER'S WEEKEND GETAWAY, 2010
"ALL ABOUT SOCKS"
May 21, 22, 23
Located at the beautiful Tygart Lake State Park, this sock-themed weekend getaway is a must for any knitter who loves socks, whether you’re a pro or just learning the art of making hand-made socks. Of course, all knitters are encouraged to bring their current projects, take advantage of the weekend to catch up on unfinished projects, or to simply sit back and relax.

LET'S GET STARTED
The weekend getaway will start Friday at 7pm with a Meet and Greet featuring Knit-O [the knitting version of bingo], refreshments, prizes and laughter.

WORKSHOPS
Workshops, will be held throughout Saturday and Sunday. Worsted weight practice yarn will be provided, needles will not.

CHOOSE FROM THE FOLLOWING WORKSHOPS

Magic Loop
Knitting with one long circular needle can eliminate or at least minimize the need for double pointed needles. This will definitely change the way you think about knitting in the round. A 32" flexible needle such as addi-Turbo or Knit Picks will be needed to practice this technique.

Using Double-Pointed Needles
Having points at both ends, double pointed needles allow knitting in the round to create tubes of knitting. Typically, double-pointed needles are chosen for smaller tubes: socks, tops of hats and sleeve cuffs. Bring a set [typically 4 to 5 needles] of double points for practicing.

The Formula for the Basic Sock
Constructing a sock involves a particular math. Learn how to determine the length of the ribbing, the heel flap size, the numbers involved in turning the heel as well as the math required for the gusset pick up and toe decreasing. Hand outs will be provided

Toe Construction
Learning to make a squared toe is one of many techniques which can be used to construct sock by knitting from the toe up. Knitting toe-up allows for perfect fitting, just try it on as you knit. Running out of yarn is prevented simply by adjusting the sock leg length to the amount of remaining yarn.

German Twisted Cast-on
Sometimes referred to as the Old Norwegian cast on, the German twisted cast on forms a tidy, very elastic as well as a sturdy edge which makes it ideal for socks knit from the cuff down, mittens knit from the wrist up, and hats knit from the brim up. Any type needle may be used to practice this method.

Kitchener Stitch
Grafting, also known as Kitchener stitch or weaving, joins two sets of stitches that are still on the needle (a.k.a. "live") by using a tapestry needle threaded with yarn to create a row that looks like knit stitches between them thus producing an invisible horizonal seam. It's perfect for the toes of socks, the top of hoods and baby garments or anywhere else you don't want the thickness of bound-off edges sewn together. Bring a darning/tapestry needle and double pointed needles.

MORE "STUFF"
~There will be a “Chinese Auction” throughout the weekend, with the drawing held on Sunday.
~A variety of unique sock yarns will be available for purchase with some being offered at sale prices. Bring extra cash or your check book [sorry, no plastic accepted for these purchases]. Needle types suggested for the workshops will also be available for purchase.
~If you want to start something new, knitting kits and accessories will be displayed and will be available for purchase as well as an offering of sale items provided by Yarn & Company.
